The Archdale Drug “Share the Road” Memorial Bike Ride, a ride hosted and organized by the Bobby Labonte Foundation, will honor those who lost their lives while cycling in both the Piedmont and Charlotte regions. Cyclists David Sherman of Greensboro, Adam Little of Charlotte, Gina Jacobs of High Point and Kathy Schubert of Winston-Salem all have been killed after being struck by motorists since 2009. The “Share the Road” Memorial Bike Ride was created by the Labonte Foundation to raise awareness and give funds to Bikes Belong, a cycling advocacy group.
“We originated the idea of the ride to always remember those from our local communities who we’ve lost while cycling,” said Bobby Labonte. “We want to keep remembering those who were tragically killed and continue to raise awareness for motorists to share the road. We hope we can get a lot of riders out on May 20th to show our support of the cycling community that is no longer with us. This ride is in their honor.”
The ride is part of the newly-created “Heart of Carolinas Triple Crown”, a three-race cycling series in North Carolina that includes Tour de Kale and Operation Red Sleigh, and is planned for Sunday, May 20. Registration will open at 11:00 a.m. with the ride beginning at 1:00 p.m. The event will start and finish at Wheatmore High School in Trinity, N.C.
The new series will have timing and scoring with a leader jersey awarded at the end of the event to the overall best times in the longest distance events. At the end of the series, cash and prizes will be given to the overall winner in both male and female divisions. Cyclists must compete in all three events to be eligible for the cash and prizes at the end of the series. The three-race series will be administered by a board including Rodney Simpson, Chris Skeen, Kris Hickey and Greg Seabolt.

The cost is $75 for all three events or $30 for an individual rider if you pre-register. The cost the day of the event is $35. Teams of eight or more also welcome and cost is $25 per rider.
