Royals Hall of Famer George Brett Returns to Kansas Speedway

George Brett had the opportunity of a lifetime on Saturday at Kansas Speedway. Brett, a Royals and MLB Hall of Famer, had the chance to take fast laps around the 1.5-mile oval and give the command to fire engines before the GoBowling.com 400.

Royals manager, Ned Yost, has a rich history around NASCAR. He and Dale Earnhardt Sr. had a very close friendship back in the day. Yost also tells stories from time-to-time involving their close friendship.

When asked if he received any tips from Yost.

“He was kinda hoping it would be a day game today in Kansas City so he could probably be out here at the race 20 minutes after the game was over. He finds himself in Cleveland this weekend,” Brett told SpeedwayDigest.com. “It’s funny. Every weekend in spring training and throughout the season the club house kids and Yost have these pools that cost $5 dollars to enter and you picked two or three drivers. Ned wins a lot of them for sure!”

George mentioned that he followed NASCAR until his sons grew up enough where they began playing baseball. With that going on during the weekends, he started to lose his ability to keep up with NASCAR.

“I think after coming here today it’s gonna rekindle the fire just following these guys I have met,” Brett continued. “It’s hard to follow guys that you don’t know, but I think once you meet someone, you want to start following them a little bit more on a regular basis.”

If he could choose any current Royals player to take a ride around the 1.5-mile oval with an instructor, Brett would choose Salvador Perez. Why? “Because he’s got a smile on his face 24-hours a day and I don’t think he would be smiling after climbing out of the car.”

Kyle Busch led 69 laps of the GoBowling.com 400 at Kansas Speedway for his third Sprint Cup Series win of the year with Joe Gibbs Racing. Joe Gibbs Racing have won six of the first 11 races in 2016. Matt Kenseth, who finished fourth at Kansas, remains the only winless Joe Gibbs Racing team.
