NSCS: Denny Hamlin Captures Dover Pole

Denny Hamlin captured the pole for Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at the Dover International Speedway. Hamlin posted a fast time of 22.483 seconds, 160.121 mph. in his No. 11 FedEx Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing. The Virginian native will start on the pole for the 21st time of his career.

Starting right beside Hamlin will be Martin Truex Jr. in the No. 78 Chevrolet for Furniture Row Motorsports. Truex posted a time of 22.539 seconds, 159.723 mph. in the final round of knockout qualifying. The New Jersey native hopes the runner-up start will take him to another top 10 finish this season and a victory. His last win came in 2013 at the Sonoma Raceway.

Kyle Larson will make up the third starting spot of the FedEx 400 at the Dover International Speedway. Larson posted a fast time of 22.545 seconds, 159.681 mph. in the final round of qualifying. The effort will give Larson his seventh top 10 start of the season in his No. 42 Target Chevrolet.

The Roush Fenway Racing cars found some speed this weekend at Dover. Greg Biffle and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. will both have top 10 starts on Sunday afternoon. Biffle and Stenhouse will take the green flag in the third and seventh starting spots. Trevor Bayne will roll off the pit lane in 31st.

The Hendrick Motorsports gang did not make the final round of knockout qualifying. Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. will respectively start 14th and 15th on Sunday. Jeff Gordon and Kasey Kahne will take the green in the 22nd and 25th positions.

Two drivers will not make the race on Sunday. Those were Travis Kvapil and Jeff Green. There were no incidents in the three rounds of knockout qualifying.
