NSCS: Matt Kenseth Wins Coca-Cola 600 Pole

Matt Kenseth captured the pole at the Charlotte Motor Speedway on Thursday for the 56th annual Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday. Kenseth earned his second pole of the year after a fast lap of 27.799 seconds, 194.252 mph. The Wisconsin native led the first and final rounds of knockout qualifying.

Joey Logano will take the green flag on Sunday in the runner-up spot after a time of 28.003 seconds, 192.836 mph. in the final round. Logano will make his 10th top 10 start of the year in his Shell/Pennzoil Ford. He was 0.204 seconds away from scoring his fifth pole of the year.

Starting in third will be Carl Edwards in the No. 19 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing. Edwards, a native from the state of Missouri, will go after his second top 10 finish of the season on Sunday in the Coca-Cola 600. He’ll have momentum after posting a lap of 28.018 seconds, 192.733 mph.

All-Star race winner Denny Hamlin will also have a great starting spot in NASCAR’s longest race. Hamlin will start the event in the fifth position. Hamlin posted a 28.124 seconds, 192.007 mph.

There were one on-track incident involving the No. 32 of Mike Bliss off turn four. Bliss impaled the orange cone as he spun through the infield grass. He will not make the show for the event on Sunday.

There were five drivers who did not qualify for the race on Sunday. Those five are Jeb Burton, Mike Bliss, Travis Kvapil, Jeff Green and Brendan Gaughan.
