NSCS: Joey Logano Captures Martinsville Pole

Joey Logano captured the pole for Sunday’s 66th annual STP 500 at the Martinsville Speedway. Logano posted a lap time of 19.232 seconds, 98.461 mph. to capture his second pole of the year. The 24-year old ended the first and second rounds of qualifying sitting second and eighth.

Ryan Newman will start second behind the wheel of his No. 31 Chevrolet. Newman posted a time of 19.258 seconds, 98.328 mph. Newman will start inside the top 10 for the fifth time of the year. He was 0.026 seconds slower than the pole sitter.

Martin Truex Jr. will roll from the third starting spot on Sunday after a time of 19.313 seconds, 98.048 mph. Truex will start inside the top 10 for the second time of the year in his No. 78 Chevrolet. He hopes the run on Friday will help him continue his top 10 finishing streak on Sunday. Truex was 0.081 seconds behindLogano.

Kevin Harvick will take the green flag on Sunday in the 17th starting spot. Harvick, who comes into the event with the points lead after winning two races, posted a time of 19.470 seconds, 97.257 mph.

Chase Elliott, who is making his Sprint Cup Series debut on Sunday, will start the STP 500 from the 27th starting position. Elliott did not advance into the second round after a time of 19.538 seconds, 96.919 mph.

Brendan Gaughan and Ron Hornaday Jr. will not make the race. Hornaday got into the wall in the first session that caused a lot of damage to the car. Justin Allgaier, who will roll from the 21st spot on Sunday, also got into the wall in the second round. Casey Mears damaged his transmission and will need to make a change. Mears will have to start from the rear.

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will resume track action tomorrow for the second and final practice sessions. Fans can watch the first session at 10:00 a.m. Et. on FOX Sports 1. Final practice is set to get underway at 1:00 p.m. Et. on FOX Sports 2.
