Cole Whitt led his BK Racing teammates to the checkered flag with a 30th-place finish in the No. 26 Uponor Toyota Camry at Dover (Del.) International Speedway on Sunday afternoon. Whitt was followed by Alex Bowman in the No. 23 Dr Pepper Toyota Camry who finished 34th, and Travis Kvapil who finished 38th in the No. 83 Burger King / Dr Pepper Toyota Camry.
Racing at the track nicknamed “The Monster Mile” for the second time this season, Whitt rolled off 29th for Sunday’s 400-mile event. The Sunoco Rookie contender fought the balance of his car for most of the day while experiencing a loose condition in the turns. His Uponor team worked through several air pressure and chassis adjustments looking to give their Toyota Camry more grip navigating the corners. As track conditions changed, Whitt noticed some improvement on the short run, but still experienced the same handling condition on the long run. Racing inside the 20s throughout most of the day, an issue on the final pit stop of the day relegated Whitt to a 30th-place finish.
“We fought the handling on our Uponor Toyota Camry all day today” commented Whitt. “No matter what changes we tried we just lacked grip, and our teammates experienced the same issue. I appreciate all the work from my team. We took several big swings at the car, but they weren’t quite big enough. We added several new pages to our notebook, so at least we can say we learned a few things while we were at Dover.”
Bowman competed at “The Monster Mile” for the second time this season while racing the No. 23 Dr Pepper Toyota Camry. Fighting a car that was loose on entry and tight through the center of the turns, the Sunoco rookie contender worked with his BK Racing team to make several significant changes throughout the afternoon. While the adjustments improved his car during the short run, the handling issues often returned as the run progressed. By the time the checkered flag waved, Bowman was scored in the 34th position.
“I had a busy weekend this week at Dover International Speedway,” commented Bowman. “In addition to racing our Dr Pepper Toyota Camry in the Sprint Cup Series Race, I also ran the No. 80 Toyota in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. I think it was beneficial for me to be able to get so many laps in on the track. It gave me a lot of time to focus on my line in practice and built up my confidence and comfort while driving our Dr Pepper Toyota Camry on Sunday afternoon.”
Making his second start this season for BK Racing, Kvapil rolled off 42nd at Dover International Speedway on Sunday afternoon. Like his teammates, Kvapil’s Burger King / Dr Pepper Toyota Camry team fought a car that lacked front grip throughout the entire weekend. Making several significant adjustments throughout the weekend, Kvapil’s team made small improvements, but they were not able to dial in the car exactly to the driver’s liking. Kvapil was scored 38th when the race concluded.
“Our Burger King / Dr Pepper Toyota Camry just needed some more grip this weekend,” commented Kvapil. “So many teams fought the same issue throughout the afternoon–it definitely wasn’t exclusive to us. I’m really happy to have the opportunity to drive the No. 83 Toyota Camry and to work with everyone at BK Racing again. They’re a great group of talented guys, and I’m fortunate to be a part of it.”
