Whitt leads BK Racing with a 27th-place finish in Sonoma

Cole Whitt and the No. 26 Rinnani Tankless Water Heaters Toyota Camry team finished 27th at Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway on Sunday afternoon.  Needing to make only minor adjustments to fine-tune the handling of his car throughout the race, Whitt was able to easily drive to his 11th top-30 result of the season.

Celebrating his 23rd birthday, Whitt rolled off 32nd on Sunday afternoon for his very first Sprint Cup Series road course race, but was able to break inside the top 30 within the opening 20 laps.  Continually providing feedback to his team on the handling of his Rinnani Tankless Water Heater Camry, the team devised a short list of adjustments they would make throughout the race to improve the balance of the car.

Racing as high as the 20th position by lap 70, pit strategy became a very important part of the race as the only caution period during the first half of the event gave way to five additional caution periods during the second half of the event.  With several competitors suffering spins and mishaps on the track, Whitt was able to race to the finish without any incidents and led the BK Racing organization to the checkered flag with his 27th-place finish.

“It was a very cool weekend for us having Rinnani Tankless Water Heaters, a new partner of BK Racing, on board,” commented Whitt.  “This was my first race at Sonoma Raceway, so it took a little time to learn the circuit, but I was pretty comfortable with it heading into the race.  Our Toyota Camry was pretty good all day.  The balance was really close, and the guys only had to fine-tune it throughout the afternoon.  I’m proud of our effort today and happy that we’ll get to race at another road course [Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International] later this season.”
