Kvapil Finishes 28th at Michigan International Speedway

Travis Kvapil and the No. 93 Burger King / Dr. Pepper Toyota Camry finished 28th at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday afternoon.  After working to fine-tune the handling of their Toyota Camry early in the event, Kvapil stayed in the race all day to cross the finish line in the 28th position.

Racing at the two-mile Michigan International Speedway for the second time in just nine weeks, competitors in the Sprint Cup Series had a good idea of what to expect from Sunday’s Pure Michigan 400.  Travis Kvapil and his No. 93 Burger King / Dr. Pepper Toyota Camry team logged just over 50 laps during three practice sessions at the track hidden in the Irish Hills of Michigan.  Kvapil went on to record a 36.707-second lap to secure the 38th starting position for Sunday’s 400-mile race.

When the green-flag waved on Sunday afternoon, Kvapil immediately got on the gas picking up seven positions in just 10 laps.  With three caution periods in the opening 20 laps, competitors in the Sprint Cup Series had several opportunities to begin forming their pit strategy for the afternoon.  The balance of Kvapil’s car was a bit free compared to where they finished practice, so the driver brought his No. 93 Burger King / Dr. Pepper Toyota Camry down pit road for some early adjustments.

When a long green-flag run followed the early cautions, Kvapil was able to stay on track longer than most of the competition and the driver logged several laps inside the top five before coming down pit road.  As the race progressed, Kvapil’s BK Racing team continued to make slight air pressure and chassis adjustments to adapt their car to the changing track conditions.  By the time the checkered flag waved, Kvapil was racing solidly inside the top 30, and was scored with a 28th-place finish.

“Our No. 93 Burger King / Dr. Pepper Toyota Camry team ran a solid race today,” commented Kvapil.  “We were a little too loose at the start of the race, but my team didn’t give up and we got the balance of our car a little better with each pit stop.  There were a lot of cautions today, and it seemed like a lot of guys ran into problems, so I’m happy we were able to have a clean race.  We’re headed to Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway next weekend where survival is a necessity.  I’m looking forward to getting back on the track with our Burger King / Dr. Pepper Toyota Camry.”
