Broc Brown Ends Terrific Weekend with Evergreen Victory

Following a Late Model Feature event win Saturday night at Mahoning Valley Speedway, 13-year old Broc Brown of Shickshinny battled at Evergreen Raceway. His return to the speedway was worthwhile, as the rising star picked up the Late Model victory, which was his second at the track this season. In a nail biter of a finish, Randy Schlenker of Whitehall worked the outside and the final two turns to snag the Street Stock verdict and Sam Ryan of White Haven took the checkers in the eventful Four Cylinder event. Brandon Oltra of Alden took his first INEX Legends victory and Garrett Zacharias cruised to victory in the INEX Bandolero division.

Mitch Hawk started from the pole and led the opening circuit of the 25-lap Late Model feature over Steve Shultz, Nick Ross, Broc Brown and Geno Steigerwalt. With one lap complete, Brown moved into third.

Brown wasted no time and eventually took second from Shultz, but he wasn’t finish. He turned the lap five pass into a third to first move and earned the lead.

One lap later Ross moved past Hawk for the runner up spot and with only two quick yellow flags to slow the pace, Brown held on for his second victory of the season. Ross settled for second, followed by Kyle Harvell, Shultz and Hawk.

Ross was the heat race winner.

Paul Morgan, Jr. started from the pole and led the Street Stock field to the drop of the green in the 25-lap feature. He led the opening lap over Greg Long, Scott Adams, Todd Ahner and Randy Schlenker.

With two laps complete, Schlenker got by Adams for the fourth spot and then battled Ahner and Long hard for position.

With Morgan still showing the way, the yellow flew when several cars tangled in turn one. The lap nine incident involved TJ Gursky, Brian Brown, Kevin Weierback and Charlie Castiglione. With significant damage on his car, Castiglione was unable to continue.

Green flag racing resumed and Long hounded Morgan, who tried to hold off his competition. With 10 laps remaining, Long got by the leader and Ahner climbed into second a lap later. With five to go, Ahner took his turn at the lead and Long fought hard to regain it.

With a few laps remaining, Schlenker grabbed third, but he wasn’t done. In a fierce battle to the checkers, he overtook Long. Schlenker and Ahner crossed the stripe for the exciting finish and the advantage went to Schlenker for the win. Long, Adams and Eric Kocher completed the top five.

Ahner and Adams were heat race winners.

Ron Heeter led the Four Cylinder field to the drop of the green flag in the 20-lap feature. He led the first circuit with Sam Ryan, Eric Banashefski, Bob Azarowicz and Frank Hughes, Jr. in tow.

With Heeter showing the way, Hughes got Azarowicz out of shape to take fourth. However, a few laps later Azarowicz regained the spot.

With nine laps complete, Brayden Spencer challenged Hughes for fifth. Spencer then worked on Azarowicz and as the two tangled a bit as they raced hard through turns three and four. The end result was Hughes, who had nowhere to go, sustaining heavy damage that resulted in a DNF and loss of what would have been the division championship.

Green flag racing resumed and with a lap remaining, Ryan got by Hetter for the lead. He crossed the stripe for the victory over Heeter, Spencer, Banashefski and Jen Adams.

Jay Kanor was the highest finishing car under the Enduro rules. He was awarded a trophy for his efforts.

Spencer and Ryan were heat race winners.

Brandon Oltra took the INEX Legends heat race win and the started from the pole position in the 20-lap feature. Despite a couple of yellow flags slowing the pace, Oltra was ultra-consistent and wired the show for his first INEX Legends victory. Pat Verwys finished in second, followed by Nick VanWickle and James VanWickle.

Garrett Zacharias took the INEX Bandolero victory over Sean Verwys and Josh Duke.
