Pocono Raceway’s George Ewald Earns NASCAR Excellence Award

Pocono Raceway Vice President and Superintendent George Ewald was honored by NASCAR Monday when he collected the Excellence in Track Services Award for career contributions in the area of track services.

NASCAR Vice Chairman Mike Helton and Executive Vice President Steve O’Donnell presented the award to Ewald during the 2016 NASCAR Summit.

“George has been an extremely valuable part of Pocono Raceway for more than 45 years,” said Pocono Raceway CEO & President Brandon Igdalsky. “He is so deserving of this award and this recognition from NASCAR. No matter what needs to be done to make Pocono better and safer, George will find a way to get it done. We have known for years what a tremendous asset he is and it’s great to see others acknowledging his accomplishments.”

Ewald, who is in his 46th year of working at Pocono Raceway, has been the Superintendent of the 2.5-mile speedway since the mid-1970s. He started working at Pocono Raceway in the maintenance department in 1970 before quickly being promoted to Track Superintendent in 1975 and Vice President in 1977 by the late Dr. Joseph “Doc” Mattioli.

“I am flattered and humbled to say the least,” said Ewald. “My goal is to make Pocono Raceway the safest track possible and to ensure drivers and fans have a great experience. I am grateful for the recognition from NASCAR and glad I could share this award with the entire staff at Pocono Raceway.”
