Close Championship Battles Get Even Closer At South Boston

Just when we didn’t think the championship races at South Boston Speedway couldn’t get any closer, well, they did.

Danny Willis Jr.’s 10-point lead in the Limited Division was almost erased by Trey Crews’ victory last Saturday night. Heading into this Saturday night’s GCR Presents Spaulding Equipment Twins 75s, Willis has a single-point lead over Crews.

The Modified race is almost as close, with Mike Rudy holding an eight-point advantage over Matt Slye.

Lee Pulliam’s win in last week’s Late Model race tightened that division’s point battle a bit, but Matt Bowling still holds a 29-point lead.

Saturday night is championship night for four divisions, the final race of the season for the Limited Sportsman, Budweiser Pure Stocks, Modifieds and Budweiser Hornets.

Greg Autry has an insurmountable lead in the Budweiser Pure Stock division as does Eric Winslow in the Budweiser Hornets division.

The Late Models will have one more night of racing, twin 75s on September 19.

Willis says the strategy is simple if he wants to win a fourth Limited championship.

“We’ve got to win. There’s about no other way around that,” said Willis. “We can win it if we finish in front of Trey, but if we win the race we know we’ve out-run him. He’s really been on his game the past few weeks.”

Crews has peaked at exactly the right time. He’s won two races in a row which has boosted the young driver’s confidence.

“The last few weeks have most definitely been a good confidence builder,” said Crews. “Everything is falling into place.”

Like Willis, Crews says his strategy for Saturday night’s 50-lapper is simple.

“Win … that’s the plan. If I win and he finishes second, we win the championship,” said Crews.
