Superwinch coming to MIR’s Super Chevy Show

Many drag racers chase adrenaline or trophies when they roll their cars off their haulers, when Danny O’Day brings his car to the starting line at Memphis International Raceway (MIR) for the Super Chevy Show April 10-12, he’ll be after something else.

O’Day tours the country in the wheelstander, Superwinch, making quarter-mile passes on just his rear wheels. It’s a feat that wows the crowd and feeds that need for applause that keeps O’Day going.

“In 30 years of doing this, my heart still pounds when I fire that motor up,” O’Day said. “I love to hear those fans and we do respond to that crowd. Trust me, it never gets old. It’s why I’ve been doing this year after year.”

By drag racing rule and tradition, wheelstanders are the only cars allowed to make runs up the wrong way of the drag strip, which gives O’Day the opportunity to soak in the crowd reaction.

“When I come back up the track, I’ll slow the car down to a near stop,” O’Day said. “Then I’ll stand up there like Superman. Even before I shut the motor off, I can still hear people screaming.

“It’s just great, it’s awesome.”

He said he enjoys performing for Memphis crowds because it’s a knowledgeable fan base.

“It’s a grass-roots, mechanical people,” O’Day said. “They appreciate the way the car is built. You get a lot of people looking at the way the car is built and asking good questions.”

O’Day and Superwinch are part of the Super Chevy Show’s Pro Show lineup that also includes jet cars and Pro Mods.
