Raceway Distributes More Than 7,700 Pounds of Food to Area Food Banks

Sonoma Raceway is at full speed this holiday season, distributing more than 7,700 pounds of non-perishable food to Friends in Sonoma Helping (FISH) and the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano following the raceway’s 14th annual Thanksgiving Food Drive.

In total, the raceway distributed 7,702 pounds of food this year, bringing the 14-year total to more than 61,709 pounds of non-perishable food items for area food banks. In addition, the raceway also collected more than $850 in cash donations for FISH.

“This donation helps tremendously,” said Louise Bielfelt, longtime FISH volunteer. “You can see that you have doubled the amount of food we have here, and it will continue to come in through the community but yours is really a very large donation.”

FISH (www.friendsinsonomahelping.org) has been helping Sonoma Valley residents in need since 1970 and provides not only food, but clothing, transportation and emergency rental assistance.

The Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano (www.foodbankccs.org) has served the community for nearly 40 years. The food bank works to reduce food waste, feed hungry people and raise public awareness of issues related to food and hunger. They serve approximately 188,000 hungry people every month directly at community sites and through a network of 180 charitable agencies.

“One in eight residents now rely on the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano each month, and during the holidays we work with our 180 partner agencies to bring additional hope and relief to our neighbors struggling with hunger,” said Larry Sly, executive director of the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano. “This Thanksgiving and holiday season we will provide over 14,000 meals and about 30,000 grocery baskets to neighbors in need. Thanks to amazing community support through the Sonoma Raceway Thanksgiving Food Drive, we can make the holidays more hopeful for children, families and seniors who struggle to put food on their tables.”

Sonoma Raceway was not alone in its efforts. It was joined in the food drive by Destination RKA in Windsor, Innerstave, Levy Restaurants, the National Auto Sport Association, Pedroncelli Motorsports, Save Mart Supermarkets, Sonoma Market and Glen Ellen Village Market. Verihealth Inc. and Sonoma Gourmet also made a generous donations of food items.
