ZOO Miami Animal to Predict Winner of NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship

At 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 11th, Zoo Miami, in partnership with the Homestead Miami Speedway, will host an event that will feature “Bonsai,” a 5 month old binturong from Asia.  Bonsai will be making his official debut as Zoo Miami’s official “Wildlife Prognosticator” and will make his prediction as to who will win this year’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship!

The Championship 4 drivers who will compete for the 2014 Sprint Cup Championship are Kevin Harvick, Denny Hamlin, Joey Logano and Ryan Newman.  The champion will be decided at this year’s Ford EcoBoost 400 which will take place this Sunday, November 16th at 3:00 p.m.  Homestead-Miami Speedway has been the host of the championship race each year since 2002 and as a community partner, Zoo Miami officials thought it would be fun for Bonsai to join all of the “experts” in predicting this year’s winner!

The Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup was revamped for this year for the first time since it was instituted in 2004.  The Championship 4 drivers will race amongst a full field of 43 cars and whichever of the four finish the highest will claim the 2014 Sprint Cup Series Championship!

Bonsai, the binturong will be presented with smaller model replicas of each of the four finalist’s cars.  He will then make his prediction by going to and touching the car he believes will be this year’s winner!  Binturongs are unique animals found in the tall forests of Asia that can reach a weight of close to 50 pounds.  They are primarily arboreal and are excellent climbers feeding on a variety of small mammals, birds, insects, and fruits.  Commonly called a “bear cat,” they have thick black fur and a long prehensile tail with sharp claws.  They are active both day and night and give off a scent that smells very much like popcorn.  Their biggest threat in the wild is habitat destruction due to deforestation.
