2011 NASCAR Media Pit Crew Challenge Recap

The Charlotte Fire Department dethroned 2010 NASCAR Sprint Media Pit Crew Challenge champions WCCB (Charlotte Fox Affiliate) by 0.227 seconds. The final round was fiercely contested with the CFD Firemen showing more speed in their push to the finish line.

The fifth annual NASCAR Sprint Media Pit Crew Challenge at the Time Warner Cable Arena had over 60 local and national media participants. The SPEED team looked like heavy favorites after posting the fastest first round time at 19.256 seconds. However, SPEED could not overcome WCCB in the closest semifinal of the evening with WCCB edging out the win by 0.05 seconds.

The Charlotte Fire Department beat their local rivals the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department twice en route to the finals. CFD’s individual star was Jimmy Watts, winning the fastest Gas Man individual title. The rest of the winning team included Lee Powell, Kent Davis, Jerry Taylor, Andy Simpson, Kemp Rasmussen, Brent Blumberg and NASCAR SiriusXM host Claire B. Lang as driver. ??

Filling out the field were teams from Clear Channel Radio, WCNC (Charlotte NBC affiliate), WBTV (Charlotte NBC affiliate), MRN, WSOC (Charlotte ABC affiliate) and Sprint Vision.

The 2010 NASCAR Sprint Pit Crew Challenge Champions from the No. 11 FedEx Toyota team taught the media how to perform their tasks before the first round, including individual rear tire carrier Champion Heath Cherry.

Winners from the individual skills competitions:

Rick Allen (SPEED) beat Justin Tamerlano from defending champions WCCB by 0.634 seconds.

– Top tire changers of the day were Dan Kellough and Jamie Jones (CMPD) changing the rear tires in only 12.997 seconds. Sprint Vision teammates Robbie Mays and Eric Morse were the fastest front tire changers of the day at 12.924 seconds.

– Lastly Jimmy Watts (CFD) won the gas man competition by .0349 seconds with a time of 7.941 seconds.
