ARCA: Tom Hessert Wins General Tire 200 Pole at Talladega

The ARCA Racing Series held qualifying on Friday at the 2.66-mile Talladega Superspeedway. Teams were separated into seven groups that turned laps around the oval for four minutes each.

Tom Hessert will lead the field to green later on Friday at Talladega Superspeedway in the General Tire 200. Hessert will start on the pole for the third time of his ARCA Racing Series career in the No. 25 Venturini Motorsports Toyota. The New Jersey native posted a 51.318 lap time in group five.

Starting right beside Hessert will be Gus Dean in the No. 98 Mason Mitchell Motorsports Chevrolet. Dean led the one and only practice session held early Friday morning. Dean, who ran in the sixth group, posted a time of 51.761 seconds. Dean will be making his second career ARCA Racing Series start this weekend.

Veteran ARCA Racing Series driver Bobby Gerhart will begin the General Tire 200 in the third position. Gerhart, a nine-time winner on the plate tracks, will look to win his first race since the season opener at Daytona International Speedway in February of 2012. Gerhart’s last win, which is his only win at Talladega, came in 2001 at Talladega Superspeedway from the pole.

John Wes Townley enters the General Tire 200 leading the ARCA Racing Series driver points standings. Townley ended the seven-group qualifying session in fourth in his No. 05 Chevrolet. Chase Briscoe, who sits second in the driver standings looking 90-points behind Townley, will take the green flag in the 20th spot.

FOX Sports 1 and FOX Sports Go will have live coverage of the race starting at 6:00 p.m. ET. You can follow live timing and scoring and audio on ARCARacing.com. You can also listen to radio coverage of the race on Thunder 92.7 in the Talladega area.
