Timothy Peters is always pumped when he heads to a race at Martinsville Speedway. It’s his home track and he’s always been solid on the historic half-mile oval.
As he prepares for Sunday’s ValleyStar Credit Union 300 at Martinsville, he’s more confident than ever. He’s recorded three consecutive top-four finishes in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series including a second Saturday night in Las Vegas. And he is very comfortable with the autosbynelson.com Toyota Camry he will drive in Sunday’s huge Late Model Stock race which pays $25,000 to the winner.
“The way we’ve finished in our Red Horse Tundra the last three races gives us a lot of momentum for Talladega in a couple of weeks, but really helps headed back to Martinsville this weekend for the ValleyStar Credit Union 300,” said Peters, who is also sponsored this weekend by Valvoline, Blue Ridge Color Company, Haywood Jewelers and Reactor.
Peters typically tries to work the VSCU 300 into his schedule if at all possible. This year’s race was originally scheduled for last week, and Peters had planned on racing his Red Horse Racing Tundra in Las Vegas on Saturday night and fly back to Martinsville in time for the Late Model race. Torrential rains forced postponement of the VSCU 300 to this week, which fit Peters’ schedule even better. The truck series is idle this week.
He has spent a good part of this week fine-tuning the autosbynelson.com Camry. And he should know what it takes to dial a vehicle in for Martinsville. He won this event in 2005 and captured the Kroger 200 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race in 2009.
A year ago he was running third in the VSCU 300 when a broken alternator belt forced him to the sidelines with just 10 laps remaining.
His past Martinsville successes, plus a weekend at his home track racing in front of family and friends leave him excited about Sunday afternoon.
“Our test went well a couple of weeks ago and we’re excited about our autosbynelson Camry,” said Peters. “Martinsville weekend is always big to me. It doesn’t matter if it’s a Late Model race or a truck race, I always want to win because it’s home for me.”
The ValleyStar Credit Union 300 day will start at noon Sunday with three 25 lap heat races and one “last chance” heat to set the field, followed by the 200 lap feature, with a break at lap 150 and a “blind draw” invert.
