Dominator Spreading Love of Cars

The thing that brings the most pride to Joe “Dominator” Woods about being a part of the show “Street Outlaws” has nothing to do with win lights or where he ranks in the Oklahoma City Top 10 and has everything to do with providing automotive inspiration.

“My whole goal with the show wasn’t about the street racing part of it,” Dominator said. “I hoped that I’d be able to get the guys who own old muscle cars, pro street cars and race cars that have been buried in garages under old Christmas decorations to get their stuff back out there.

“Get these cars back running and going to the track or to cruise nights.”

Dominator will join three other stars – Derek, Doc and Monza – of the wildly popular Discovery channel show at Memphis International Raceway’s (MIR) Catch the Outlaws event on Friday and Saturday (June 5 and 6), just don’t be surprised if Dominator finds a way to inspire a future generation of racers when he’s in the MIR pits.

“I spend as much time as I can at these kind of events with the fans, especially the kids,” Dominator said. “I let the kids climb in the car and take our picture in the car rather than standing out in front of it. There’s nothing better than seeing the look on a kid’s face when you ask if they want to take a picture in the car rather than outside of it.

“I think of it this way, there’s nothing in that car that they can break that I haven’t broken three times anyway. So by all means, let them in.”

When it’s his turn to jump in the car, Dominator said he’s looking forward to squaring off against his Oklahoma City counterparts.

“It’s been a while since we’ve had a group race where we haven’t been filming,” he said. “It’s going to be a good time.”

While he’s having a time with his racing buddies, Dominator said hopes he meets more people who have rediscovered their own racing roots.

“I want to see guys living and loving their cars again,” Dominator said. “It’s a chance for guys to get their kids involved in it. Everywhere I go, I run into people who are doing it. Last week it was a dad who had parked a Chevy II in a garage and hadn’t touched it in 20 years. He got his 16-year old kid to help him pull all the junk off of it and get it cruising again.”

Gates for Catch the Outlaws open at 6 p.m. each night. The Outlaws will race three times a night between 8 p.m. and midnight with free autograph sessions throughout the evening.

For racers who want to take to the track alongside the show’s stars, there will be a $100 bounty awarded each night for the street legal car with the quickest ET. On Saturday night, a racer admission includes a free entry into the Box or No Box Gambler’s Race that pays $1,000 to the winner. Time trials for that race get under way at 7 p.m.

Admission to the event is $20 for racers and spectators with children 12 and under free. A two-day pass for spectators is $30.
