The two scheduled practice sessions for the ARCA Racing Series concluded Friday morning at the Daytona International Speedway. The fastest single lap over the course of the two sessions will determine the groups for qualifying on Friday afternoon.
Bobby Gerhart, an eight-time winner in the series at Daytona, led the field with the fastest time posted on Thursday. Gerhart’s fast time clocked in at 47.633 seconds, 188.945 mph. With just minutes remaining in final practice on Friday morning, Gerhart ran a shake-down lap to post the 27th fastest time. Gerhart will participate in the fifth group for qualifying.
Patrick Staropoli, who is making his ARCA Racing Series debut on Saturday, ended the morning final practice session as the fastest driver. Staropoli posted a lap of 47.386 seconds, 189.930 mph. with just seconds remaining. The 25-year-old will go out in group five for qualifying.
How will the group qualifying work? Each group of seven drivers will have eight minutes to post their fastest lap. The top-30 positions will set the starting lineup for the Lucas Oil 200 presented by AutoZone. Positions 31 through 34 will then be awarded to drivers based on the final 2014 owner points standings. Spots 35 through 39 will be issued to drivers who competed in every race throughout the 2014 ARCA Series season. The final 40th spot will be awarded to a past champion. If no past champion, the spot will then be given to a fifth driver based on the final 2014 owner points standings.
Fans can follow coverage of qualifying on ARCARacing.com with a live leaderboard and radio play-by-play. There will be no streaming or television coverage of the event.
