NKNPSW: Phoenix Race Preview, Pursley Looks to Secure Championship

The NASCAR K&N Pro Series West turns to the Phoenix International Raceway for the Casino Arizona 100. This event serves as the season finale for the series after a great run here in 2014. Gray Gaulding, who is making just his fifth career appearence in the West division, comes into the race Thursday evening as the defending race winner.

Some of the 32 drivers featured on the entry list for Thursday’s event include: Cole Custer, Justin Funkhouser, J.J. Hayley, Gray Gaulding, Wendall Chavous, Austin Reed, D.J. Kennington, Kelly Admiraal and Nick Drake.

Cole Custer, Gray Gaulding, David Mayhew and Greg Pursley are the only drivers entered who has atleast one career win at Phoenix. Each one of these drivers, especially Pursley, hopes to leave the track with a great finish to close out the year on a high note.

Three drivers come into the weekend with a shot of capturing the 2014 NASCAR K&N Pro Series West championship. Pursley enters with a 21-point lead over second-place of Dylan Lupton. Brandon McReynolds sits third and finds himself 28-points behind Pursley to make it a three car battle. David Mayhew, who comes into Phoenix in fourth, doesn’t have a shot at the title but still could mathmatically finish the year in third. The top-three drivers could be interesting to watch all race long.

Cole Custer comes into this race with some unfinished business. Last season in this race, which was only a 50-mile event, Custer led the first 49 laps. On the final lap in turn four, Gaulding saw an opportunity to punt Custer to steal the victory. Custer was able to drive the car accross the line to finish in sixth. In the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West season opener in February, Custer was finally able to snatch his first victory in the series after leading 62 of the 80 laps. It’ll be interesting to see if the two drivers clash in tonight’s event after getting into each other all year long.
