Kenzie Ruston is looking to deliver on the promising top-10 run she had going in May at the Iowa Speedway. Ruston was running in the top-10 through the first half of the race, when a mechanical failure relegated her to a sixteenth place finish.
“I think that was the toughest fifty laps I’ve ever driven in a race car,” said Ruston. “We had a fast car in May, and then it was like someone flipped a switch. We got it back to Daytona to our shop and found the problem, so hopefully we got our round of bad luck out of the way and we should have a top-5 car this time around.”
Crew Chief Mike Fritts re-enforced Ruston’s remarks: “It was a simple parts failure that hurt us in May. It’s part of racing, but fortunately we had some speed so we think we have a good starting point when we unload. Kenzie gives us an advantage over a lot of drivers because she’s going to look for all the things she needs. Iowa is a bumpy track and she is one of the best at helping dial in the car for race runs instead of all out speed. If we can give her a car to get through the bumps and keep the right rear tire on the car all night, she can get us to the front.”
Iowa has been a mixed bag for Ruston. In three career starts at Iowa Speedway, Ruston has one top-10 finish, a seventh, in the August 2013 event. In her first start at Iowa Speedway she was the victim of a Lap 48 crash, which ended her day.
“I’ve always had speed at Iowa, just a few things have happened outside my control or my teams control,” said Ruston. “I love racing at Iowa. Being from Oklahoma, Iowa Speedway is as close to home as I get during our season, so its nice to have family and friends come out and be a part of the weekend. Hopefully I can give them something to be excited about Saturday night.”
