Doug Coby Wins Postponed NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Event at Stafford Motor Speedway

Two weeks after the TSI Harley-Davidson 125 was supposed to be run Doug Coby outran Bobby Santos and Justin Bonsignore on Friday night to win the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race at Stafford Motor Speedway. The race was originally supposed to be held on May 23rd and then again on May 30th but both times was postponed due to storms.

Santos had won the pole back on May 23rd for the scheduled 125 lap race at the half mile track. He would lead the first six laps before Coby would take the lead. The first caution did not come out until lap 104 with Coby still leading. Another caution flew on lap 113 when Tommy Barrett Jr and Jamie Tomaino crashed.

Then on lap 122 the race was pushed into a green-white-checkered finish when Matt Hirschman spun. On the restart Santos was able to momentarily take the lead from Coby but it did not last long as Coby powered back past shortly after. Bonsignore would also get by Santos but came up 0.394 seconds behind Coby at the finish line on lap 130.

The win was the 10th of Coby’s NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour career and sixth at the Stafford track. Bonsignore finished second with Santos in third. Rowan Pennink finished fourth, Woody Pitkat fifth, Ron Silk sixth, Patrick Emerling seventh, Ted Christopher eighth, Ryan Preece ninth, and Glen Reen tenth. Other notables in the 24-car field were Donny Lia in 15th, Tommy Barrett Jr in 20th and Jamie Tomaino in 21st.

After three tour races Doug Coby has now taken the points lead by four points over Justin Bonsignore. Woody Pitkat is nine back in third, Bobby Santos is 16 back in fourth, and Ted Christopher is 22 back in fifth. Ron Silk is sixth, Timmy Solomito is seventh, Rowan Pennink eighth, Eric Goodale ninth, and Ron Yuhas Jr tenth. Last year’s champion Ryan Preece is 14th.

The next race up is the Mr. Rooter 161 at Waterford Speedbowl on Saturday, June 21st.
