As the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series takes a weekend off, David Ragan will return to his Georgia short-track roots Friday to compete in the 10th Annual Race for the Shrine at Oglethorpe Speedway Park in Pooler, Ga. The event on the half-mile clay speedway will benefit the Alee Shrine and will include a pre-race autograph session with Ragan.
Ragan will participate in the Street Stocks event in a car provided by a local car owner. Gates open at 6 p.m. with racing beginning at 8 p.m.
“It’s an off weekend but I’m going racing,” Ragan said. “It’s kind of a vacation to go back home and see all the family. Doing events like this is relaxing, it’s fun. You don’t have a lot of pressure like we do on the regular Cup weekend. So, we will be at a racetrack, but it will be a little different. I hope everybody can come out, enjoy some short-track racing and help the Shriners.”
Ragan, who is a Shriner himself, dedicates time every year to causes that help the Shrine and also makes regular visits to Shriners Hospitals for Children to visit patients.
Oglethorpe Speedway Park is a historic facility near Savannah, Ga., that has hosted the likes of Lee Petty, Dale Earnhardt, Junior Johnson, Ned Jarrett and Fireball Roberts. Grandstand tickets for Friday’s race are $12 for adults and $10 for military and seniors. Children 12 and under are admitted free. Visit www.ospracing.net for more information.
