Shepherd oldest to lead laps in NNS race

It’s difficult enough for anyone in today’s NASCAR just to qualify for a race, much less lead the race. Especially when your 70 years of age. In fact, it’s never been done in history until Friday’s Richmond Nationwide Series event in front of 42,000 in attendance when Morgan Shepherd extended his NASCAR record as the oldest man to be at the top of the leader board of a NASCAR event when he led four laps by staying out under caution.

“The #89 car was really good and we were able to stay on the lead lap.” said Shepherd. “When the opportunity was there, we decided to stay out for the extra bonus point.” The 70-year-old Shepherd qualified for his 4th race of the season in the 32nd position and had raced his way up into the top 25 when the caution came out and the leaders pitted giving Shepherd the opportunity. “I’d like to say that I had a leg cramp and mashed the pedal down to lead under green!” Shepherd joked, “But if that would’ve happened, I would’ve just taken a Hyland’s Leg Cramp pill to get rid of it. Hyland’s is a big reason why I’m able to continue doing what I love to do this year even though it’s been a difficult 2012 season for our team. I feel great physically and I know I could do better if the funding was there, but it’s tough for alot of guys. It was nice to lead some laps and give the fans a thrill even for a short time.”
