David Starr Post-Race Report: Talladega Superspeedway

After an exciting race at Talladega Superspeedway Saturday afternoon, David Starr and the No. 44 Steely Lumber Co. Camry finished the Aarons 312 ninth. Starr battled his way from his 16th place starting position, to eventually leading the race under green flag conditions.

Starr’s Toyota Camry was fast all throughout the race and he did not have any complaints on the handling of his Camry. The No. 44 Steely Lumber Co. Camry team only made one, small adjustment over the coarse of 117 laps.

With 58 laps to go, Starr was running 23rd and kept working his way to the front. When a late caution came out with about 20 laps to go, Starr was scored in 4th.  The green flag waved with 15 laps to go and right after we took the green flag the spotter came on the radio and said, “New Leader 44!”

Coming to 9 laps to go, Starr was leading the field to the green flag. When the red flag was shown with 5 laps to go, Starr was scored in 5th. Unfortunately, we did not have a drafting partner when the green flag waved and we lost the draft with the top 5 cars.

David Starr and the No. 44 Steely Lumber Co. Camry finished the Aarons 312 ninth. Starr led five laps and gained 36 drivers points. After his top ten finish, he currently sits 21st in the Driver’s Points Standings.

Driver Quote:

“I was excited for all the guys on the team.  We don’t have a big team, but we have a team with a lot of heart.  Mark Smith (team owner) and Kathy are just great people,” said David Starr. “I cannot thank Steely Lumber Company and all our sponsors enough for making this possible for me. It’s really cool to be able to run up front like that.  Our finish — we finished ninth and we wanted to win.  I kind of got freight-trained and really didn’t have anybody to push me, but all in all I’m glad to have a finish in the top-10 and excited.”
