Mayhew Finishes 12th in Phoenix

David Mayhew finished 12th at Phoenix International Raceway in the No. 19 Steak and Grape / MMI Services RAM on Friday evening. The Brad Keselowski Racing (BKR) team battled through a tough field in Phoenix.

Mayhew had a solid qualifying run on Friday afternoon as he put his BKR RAM in the 13th position to begin the Lucas Oil 150.

On lap 36, the yellow flag waved for the first time of the night for a spin on the backstretch. Mayhew had muscled his BKR RAM up to eight place at the time of the caution. Chief Jeff Stankiewicz called the Steak and Grape / MMI Services RAM on to pit road for four tires, fuel, and a track bar adjustment. Mayhew restarted in 13th position on lap 41.

The caution flags flew early and often on Friday night in Phoenix. Yellows also waved on laps 44, 48, and 53 with the Steak and Grape / MMI Services RAM declining additional service. On lap 64, the yellow waved again, and Stankiewicz called Mayhew in for a fuel only stop. The No. 19 BKR RAM restarted in the 16th position. The yellow flag fell for the fifth time of the night when Nelson Piquet clipped Johnny Sauter, which ended up collecting Ron Hornaday, Jr. as well. Mayhew restarted in the 14th position on the lap 72 restart.

Lap 79 brought out the caution flag once again as the truck of Cale Gale spun off of turn four. Mayhew restarted in fifth position for the restart. On lap 102, the caution waved for a spin by a lapped truck off of turn 4, and the Steak and Grape / MMI Services RAM had slid back to 13th place at the time of the caution. Stankiewicz called Mayhew into the pits for left side tires and fuel. When the red flag waved for clean up of an incident in turn one on lap 110, Mayhew found himself running in the 10th position. Mayhew held 10th place until a late caution waved on lap 147 setting up a green-white-checkered flag restart. Mayhew slid back a few positions in the final laps ending the night in 12th.

“I would like to thank Steak and Grape / MMI Services and Brad Keselowski for the opportunity,” said Mayhew. “We came up a bit short of what we had hoped this weekend, but many thanks to Jeff Stankiewicz and the BKR team for their efforts. I’m looking forward to the future and appreciate the chance to compete with Brad Keselowski Racing.”
