NCWTS: 3, 2, 1 Brett Moffitt Wins Careers for Veterans 200 at Michigan

Brett Moffitt went to victory lane at Michigan International Speedway for his first career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victory. Moffitt started the day in sixth and entered the weekend with momentum after nearly winning the last time out at Bristol Motor Speedway. The win will give Moffitt three top five and three top 10 finishes in only six starts.

“This has been huge. At the beginning of the year we didn’t have anything on the schedule. Coming here and these guys give me such good race trucks week in and week out,” said Moffitt on FS1. “I knew it was just a matter of time. Honestly, during the race I didn’t think it was going to be our day. It was just tough out there with the draft, but what an amazing finish. It couldn’t have worked out any better for us. I can’t thank Tom DeLoach (team owner) and everybody at Red Horse Racing enough and Camping World for putting this on.”

Moffitt led the most important lap as he went the first 99 laps without leading the field.

“Honestly, I was just hoping to hold onto third there for a while,” Moffitt continued. “I didn’t really think it was going to be our day to win. I knew we were going to be competitive and when the 9 (William Byron) got to the inside of him, I knew it would slow them both down and I thought this couldn’t be any more perfect. Barely got to the inside of him going into (turn) one and from then on I was just hoping and praying that it was enough to hold him off down the backstretch. It’s the only one you have to lead, that’s when the pay window is open and that’s when the checks are getting wrote.”

Moffitt’s last three Camping World Truck Series finishes:

3rd Pocono Raceway

2nd Bristol Motor Speedway

1st Michigan International speedway

Timothy Peters will leave the two-mile oval in second despite leading the most laps. Peters, a teammate of Moffitt, started the Careers for Veterans 200 in the fourth starting position. The North Carolina native continues to search for his first win of the season to secure a spot into the Chase.

Daniel Hemric rounded out the top three when the checkered flag ended the event. Hemric started the day in 13th behind the wheel of his No. 19 DrawTite Ford for Brad Keselowski Racing. The North Carolina native will leave the two-mile Michigan International Speedway with six top five and 11 top 10 finishes through 14 races this year.

William Byron showed strength upfront in the waning laps of the Career for Veterans 200. Byron, the hottest driver in the series with five victories, led three different times for nine laps. The young driver will leave Michigan with a fourth-place finish.

Several key drivers had a rough day behind the wheel of their trucks. Accidents over the course of the race claimed Cody Coughlin, Cole Custer, Christopher Bell, Spencer Gallagher, John Hunter Nemechek and Enrique Contreras. There were seven cautions for 38 total laps.

John Wes Townley started on the pole for the second time of his career. Townley posted a 39.195, 183.697 mph. in the final round of qualifying. The Georgia driver will leave the track with a 12th place finish.

The next race for the Camping World Truck Series will be next Sunday at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park. Coverage will begin at 2:30 P.M. ET. live on FOX Sports 1. The Motor Racing Network and SiriusXM Channel 90 will have the radio coverage.
