Tyler Young rallies to a track best finish at Homestead

Looking to end his sophomore NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) season on a high-note, Tyler Young persevered through his time at Homestead-Miami (Fl.) Speedway (HMS) Friday night, to finish a track-best 19th-place in the 20th annual NCWTS 200.

After posting the 22nd-fastest time in Friday morning’s lone NCWTS practice session, Young qualified 23rd for the 134-lap event later that afternoon. Running within the top-25 for the first 30 laps, Young was forced to relinquish a lap to the leaders after fighting a Chevrolet Silverado that was “tight through the center and off.” Crew chief Bryan Berry opted to bring the 25-year-old driver to pit road, under green on lap 49, for four tires, fuel, and adjustments to aid in the the No.02 machine’s handling. However, being forced to pit road under green, Young would lose another lap to the leaders, putting him two laps down overall.

The yellow flag would be displayed for the second time, on lap 60, and Berry would elect to leave Young on the track to take the “wave around,” receiving one of his two laps back. Restarting 22nd, Young would fight to remain the first truck one lap down until a caution, 15 laps later, allowed the Midland, Texas native to be the beneficiary of the “Lucky Dog” award, putting the No. 02 machine back on the lead lap.

Pitting for four tires, fuel, and adjustments, to aid in a still tight Chevrolet Silverado, Young would restart 21st on lap 84.  Trying to maintain his position on track for the remaining 46 green-flag laps, Young would ultimately lose a lap to the leaders with just over 20 laps to go. Making up as much ground as he could, the Midland, Texas native fought a relentless battle to come home with a 19th-place finish, a track-best for the sophomore driver.

“Homestead (Miami Speedway) is a tough track. I feel like overall we ran a lot better this year compared to how we ran last year. It just seems like the handling on these trucks just goes from one extreme to the other. The truck got better as the night went on, we just didn’t have the track position when we needed it. My guys worked hard all year, and I’m really proud of them, I just wish we could have gotten them a better finish tonight. As a team, we will hopefully come back next year and run even better.”
