Saturday’s Kroger 250 at Martinsville Speedway lived up to its reputation, with plenty of bent sheet metal and tempers flaring during the third stop of the season for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

After qualifying fifth then getting trapped one lap down and falling to 19th during what turned out to be the longest stretch of green flag laps in a Truck Series race at the historic .526-mile facility, John Wes Townley put on his rally cap and surged back into the top 10 during the final 50 lap sprint to the finish.

The action got wild and wooly during a green-white-checkered flag finish, but Townley managed to bring his No. 05 Zaxby’s Chevrolet home to a season-best eighth place finish after racing the competition four-wide on the final lap on the tiny, paper clip-shaped oval.

“Yeah, that was a crazy finish to that race,” said Townley, who jumped to sixth in driver points. “It was a typical day at Martinsville. We got some rear damage on our Zaxby’s Chevrolet halfway through the race when the 19 (Tyler Reddick) didn’t go on a restart.

“I had my own personal battle with (eventual race winner) Joey Logano. And then things got really wild during the final two laps. It was an interesting afternoon, to say the least.

“All in all, it was a solid day for Zaxby’s, Chevrolet and Athenian Motorsports. I’m looking forward to getting back into the truck again. I just hate that we have to wait until May when we go to Kansas.”

All three NASCAR Series will be idle next weekend to observe Easter.

But  Townley will get back in action on Friday night April 10th when he pilots the No. 25 Zaxby’s Chevrolet in the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth.

“I like the 1.5-mile track at Texas a lot,” Townley said. “Mike Ford and the Xfinity team are building a new chassis to take to that race. I feel like we’ll be competitive. I’m looking forward to it.”
