Tyler Reddick (@TylerReddick) overcame a pit road speeding penalty to score a fifth place finish in the Hyundai Construction Equipment 200 Saturday evening at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Reddick claimed his second top five in two races this season, and scored back to back top five finishes for the first time in 19 career starts. He leads the series championship standings by two points.
Reddick qualified 11th and followed teammate (and owner) Brad Keselowski through traffic during the opening segment of the race. He was running third behind Keselowski when the second caution slowed the race on lap 18. Tyler made his first scheduled pit stop one lap later for four tires and adjustments but was penalized by NASCAR for excessive speed entering the pit lane. He was sent to the tail end of the field and restarted 26th when the race went green on lap 22.
Turns out it was a minor setback.
Armed with a fast Draw-Tite Ford F-150, Reddick quickly began marching toward the front, powering his way through traffic. He was back inside the top 10 by lap 34 and was up to eighth place when the third and final caution waved on lap 51. Tyler pitted for four tires and adjustments on lap 52 and lined up fifth for the restart on lap 56.
From there the 200-mile race would run under green until the checkered flag waved on lap 130. A few laps after the restart Reddick settled into sixth position and stayed there through his final scheduled pit stop sequence for four tires and adjustments on lap 101. Nine laps later he picked off fifth place returning to the top five for the first time since the opening stages of the race. As passing was at a premium, Tyler would also end the race at Atlanta in fifth place.
