Wise Ready to Multi-Task at Martinsville

Josh Wise will have a lot on his mind when he hits the track at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway this weekend. And he wouldn’t have it any other way.

The driver of the No. 35 MDS Transport Ford knows that the flat, .526-mile oval requires teams to focus on various aspects of their cars, including taking care of their brakes and tires, and not just simply going fast. But he doesn’t mind multi-tasking behind the wheel. The old short track reminds him of the local tracks where he grew up racing, and winning championships, on the USAC circuit.

Now a full-time driver in the Sprint Cup Series for Front Row Motorsports, Wise will be making his third Cup career start at Martinsville on Sunday.

Comments from MDS Transport team driver Josh Wise heading to Martinsville:

“I’m looking forward to Martinsville. I love short-track racing. Every guy in the garage probably says the same thing. It’s what I grew up doing and I just enjoy the type of racing that it is. You can go to a lot of the bigger tracks and you’re just trying to get the car where you can hold as much throttle as you can through a run.

“But at Martinsville and that kind of track, there are a lot of other things you’re worried about, like taking care of your brakes and your tires, not burning up beads, making sure you have a car that turns in the center of the corner and has forward drive. It’s going to be exciting for me to go there for sure.

“I don’t imagine that we’ll be able to take much that we learned from Bristol to Martinsville. They’re definitely different. At Martinsville you use a ton of brake and slow the car way down in the tight corner, whereas at Bristol, even though it’s a short track, you’re going pretty fast around there.”
