Kyle Busch on pole after qualifying cancelled

Mother Nature dominated the speed charts in qualifying as NASCAR was forced to cancel qualifying for the MyAFibStory.com 400.  Kyle Busch will start from the pole after setting the fastest time in practice.

Busch turned a lap of 28.207 seconds (191.442 mph) and eclipsed the track qualifying record of 189.414 mph set by Joey Logano last season.  Ryan Newman starts alongside Busch for Sunday’s race, as four of the top five are Chase drivers.  Defending race winner Matt Kenseth rolls off fifth.  Six of the top 10 are drivers in the Chase, as Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon are seventh and eighth respectively.

Qualifying being rained out hurt the Penske cars, as Brad Keselowski was 25th in practice with Logano in 28th.  The Chicagoland race favors drivers starting outside the top 10, with five of the 14 races being won from 10th or better.  No driver has ever won Chicagoland from the pole.  Kyle Busch won from the first starting position in 2008 after that qualifying session was cancelled for the first night race at the track.  Kevin Harvick holds the worst starting position for a Chicagoland winner (32nd) in 2002.

The 2011 (Tony Stewart) and 2012 Cup champs (Brad Keselowski) went on to win Chicagoland en route to their successful Chase seasons.  The winners the last three years three have finished no worse than second in the final standings.

NASCAR got the one and only practice in today and looks to get the Lucas Oil 225 truck race in on Friday night.  The Sprint Cup Series will have two practices on Saturday in preparation for Sunday’s race.  The first practice takes place at 11 a.m. ET with TV coverage on FS1.  The green flag for the MyAFibStory.com 400 drops shortly after 2 p.m. ET Sunday and will be shown on ESPN.
