Kyle “Rowdy” Busch grabbed his second pole of 2014 for Sunday’s Camping World RV Sales 301 at New Hampshire.
Busch set a new track qualifying record of 27.574 seconds (138.13 mph).
“It was really good for us,” Busch said. “This Interstate Batteries Camry was good off the truck and it’s Dave’s (Rogers) home track, so we come up here and try to run well and do everybody on board with us. It’s been a good place for us,”
The Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) driver finished runner-up in both Cup races at Loudon last year to Brian Vickers in July and Matt Kenseth in September, both drivers who are still looking for their first win of 2014.
“I think that you try to always learn what you can,” he added. “You always try to better yourself the next time you go to a particular place and hoping we could do that here this weekend knowing what we need to get it done, based on last year’s strong runs.”
Defending and six-time Cup champ Jimmie Johnson was fastest in the lone Friday practice session and will start next to Busch on Sunday.
Busch’s JGR teammate Denny Hamlin was fastest in the first of two rounds during qualifying, but had to settle for third
Three-time Loudon Cup winner Tony Stewart and Jamie McMurray rounded out the top five. Both drivers are still looking for their first win this season.
Penske Racing teammates Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski, then Michael Waltrip Racing’s Clint Bowyer, Martin Truex Jr., and Kasey Kahne finished the Top 10.
Between positions six through 10 in qualifying, those drivers have a combined four Cup wins at the Magic Mile.
The Sprint Cup Series will have track time on Saturday as they will have two practice sessions in preparation for Sunday’s race. The first one starts at 9 a.m. and the second one at 11:30 a.m. and both will be shown live on FOX Sports 1.
