Edwards finishes 14th at the Monster Mile

Carl Edwards headed to Dover International Speedway for the 20th time in his Sprint Cup Series career looking to capture his second win at the Monster Mile. Starting from the 27th-spot, the Roush Fenway Racing driver steadily gained track position throughout the day, and drove his way into the top-15. A tight No.99 Subway Ford Fusion set him back later on, but Edwards kept digging and came home with a 14th-place finish.

Edwards was confident in his Ford after finishing sixth in first practice. Unfortunately, those practice speeds did not translate into qualifying as he would end up in 29th during the first round. Edwards once again showed speed in the second and final practice sessions, finishing third  and seventh optimistic that this would help him make gains when he hit the track during Sunday’s FedEx 400.

Edwards would start in 27th after two cars were sent to the back. He was able to quickly make his way up the field, posting lap times comparable to the leaders early on. The No. 99 Subway Ford Fusion had the momentum to pass cars one by one, and Edwards cracked the top-15, where he would remain for about 100 laps.

The Columbia, MO native maneuvered his Ford up to 11th before falling to the 20th-position after a couple of restarts.  The team worked diligently to correct a tight-handling machine but with a long green flag run they ended up a lap down with about 80 laps remaining.

After taking the wave around after the caution came out with 40 laps remaining, Edwards was back on the lead lap in 16th and fought hard for the remainder of the 400-mile race, ending the day in 14th.
