Bowman fights back and gets caught in last lap crash, finishes 28th in Talladega

Alex Bowman and the No. 23 Dr Pepper Toyota Camry team finished 28th at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway on Sunday afternoon.  First involved in the “big one,” and later in a last-lap accident, Bowman was able to maintain a top-30 finish.

Bowman rolled off 33rd for his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway.  The Sunoco Rookie contender initially struggled with the balance of his racecar, but utilized each opportunity to visit pit road and work on his No. 23 Dr Pepper Toyota Camry.  With minor chassis adjustments, Bowman was racing inside the top-20 by lap 80.  When “the big one” broke out in turn four, Bowman was among the 14 cars involved in the incident.  His Dr Pepper Camry sustained front-end damage, but his BK Racing crew worked quickly to make repairs.

Racing in the 16th position with just eight laps remaining, Bowman was involved in a last-lap accident, which relegated him to a 28th-place finish.

“Talladega is really all about survival,” commented Bowman.  “You just never know what to expect, but if you’re able to have a clean race until the finish, you have a good shot at a good finish.  Unfortunately, we got caught up in that late wreck and didn’t have enough time for our Dr Pepper team to recover.  We had solid communication all day and I feel like we continued to build on our superspeedway program, which will be really important when we return to Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway and Talladega later this season.”
