Bowman finishes 28th in Richmond

Alex Bowman and the No. 23 Dr Pepper Toyota Camry team finished 28th at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway on Saturday night.  Competing as a Sunoco Rookie Contender, Bowman’s 28th-place finish in the Toyota Owners 400 marked his fourth top-30 finish of his rookie campaign.

After heavy rain showers passed through Richmond on Friday afternoon, qualifying for the Sprint Cup Series was cancelled and the starting field was set according to the NASCAR rulebook.  As a result, Bowman rolled off 24th for Saturday’s 400-lap race.  The rookie driver called into his crew early in the event to report a tight-in loose-off condition while driving through the turns.  Throughout the event, Bowman continued to work closely with his Dr Pepper team identifying various chassis and air pressure adjustments that could improve the handling of his No. 23 Toyota Camry.

Despite the balance challenges, Bowman was able to maintain his position inside the top-30 for the majority of the event.  By the time the checkered flag waved following 400 laps of competition, Bowman was scored in the 28th position.

“It’s been fun this season to watch our Dr Pepper team grow and gel together,” commented Bowman.  “It seems like we’re finally starting to hit a stride where we’re getting better every week.  We were able to race inside the top 30 all night and bring home our fourth top-30 finish of the year.  We’re back on a superspeedway next weekend at Talladega [Ala.] Superspeedway where anything can happen, but we’re excited for our chances heading in to that event.”
