Today of course is Super Bowl Sunday, the end of the football season. For NASCAR fans that means the Daytona 500 is only 21 days away. It is less than two weeks until the cars will hit the track for Sprint Unlimited practice and Daytona 500 pole qualifying practice.
The Daytona 500 has been long described as NASCAR’s Super Bowl. It is the biggest and most prestigious race to win in NASCAR. That could begin to change with the new Chase Grid format which was introduced on Thursday which now will culminate with a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship Race to end the season at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Once that race plays out over the next handful of seasons it will take over the title of NASCAR’s Super Bowl race. The Daytona 500 will always be prestigious and at the top of the list for drivers to become a winner of but it will no longer be the Super Bowl of the sport. The new playoff system in NASCAR will create a true Super Bowl event to end the season and not just begin it.
Enjoy your time watching the Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos battle it out for football glory this evening racing fans. Then turn your excitement to what should be a great 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season all starting with the Daytona 500 in three weeks.
