Josh Wise is ready for an engine to supply the power for his next race. After completing his first half Ironman triathlon this past weekend in Racine, Wis., Wise will return to the seat of his No. 35 MDS Transport Ford for this weekend’s Samuel Deeds 400 at the Brickyard.
With the Sprint Cup Series idle this past weekend, Wise traveled to Lake Michigan for the 70.3-mile swimming, biking and running competition. He finished 394th out of more than 2,200 entrants in the event. The half Ironman represented Wise’s half-way point in training for a full Ironman triathlon in Cozumel, Mexico, in December.
Back in the car this week, Wise turns his focus back to Sprint Cup racing. Sunday’s event at Indianapolis (Ind.) Motor Speedway will mark the driver’s second start at the historic oval.

“I’m pretty proud of my effort in the half Ironman. For a rookie, I’ll think of it as a top-10. The current was pretty rough in the lake so that slowed me down, but that was the case for everybody there. It was a great experience and now I get to start training for the full Ironman in December. But right now we’ve got some racing to do.
“I can’t wait. Indy is always just such a cool place to go. You can feel the excitement when you get to that place. I got to run my first laps there last year. It’s a unique track. It’s obviously a much different configuration and shape than anything we go to. It’s a place I think everyone looks forward to going to.
“There’s just so much history at Indy. Of course, NASCAR has only been racing there a short time by comparison to IndyCar and other series. But so many great names in racing have had so many big moments at that track.
“It’s hard to believe NASCAR’s been racing at the Brickyard for 20 years. I’m guessing, but I think Jeff (Gordon) won the first one. I was watching it. That makes me feel really old actually. I can’t believe that was 20 years ago.”
