Kvapil Fights to Top-20 Finish at Sonoma Raceway

Travis Kvapil and the No. 93 Burger King / Dr. Pepper Toyota Camry team drove to a 17th-place finish on Sunday afternoon at Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway.  After starting mid-pack, the BK Racing team benefited from a strong race car and good pit strategy to race inside the top 20 throughout most of the 110-lap event.

Kvapil immediately set the pace for his team to have a competitive weekend placing 23rd in the opening practice session at the 1.99-mile circuit.  Competitors in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series qualified according to the specifications for road course qualifying, which placed Kvapil among the fourth group of five drivers to take the track for a time qualifying session.  A fastest lap of 77.169-seconds resulted in Kvapil securing the 33rd starting position for Sunday’s event.

While many drivers are challenged by the twists and turns of the road courses, Kvapil has competed in eight prior Sprint Cup Series road course races to be considered a veteran among the group.  Kvapil utilized that expertise to charge through the field in the Toyota / Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway.  After rolling off 33rd, Kvapil skillfully moved up the leader board and the No. 93 Burger King / Dr. Pepper Toyota was scored 15th by lap 40.

Kvapil was slowed just past the halfway mark when his No. 93 Burger King / Dr. Pepper Camry sustained some minor damage after contact on the track.  The team quickly made repairs and Kvapil was again on the move through the field.  With solid pit strategy, Kvapil was in position to record a top-20 finish at the Northern California road course and the No. 93 Burger King / Dr. Pepper Toyota Camry crossed the finish line in the 17th position.

“I’m really proud of the effort by my Burger King / Dr. Pepper Toyota Camry team today,” commented Kvapil.  “They worked really hard on our road course program this year and I think it showed through with how competitive we were all weekend.  We raced inside the top 20 almost all day today, had a car that could race through traffic, did a good job getting things done on pit road, and were able to keep the car on the track all day-which are all important factors at a road course.  I think if we would’ve had fresher tires there at the end, we probably could’ve gotten a few more positions, but I’m still really happy with our finish.”
