Roush Fenway’s Carl Edwards and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. qualified second and third for Sunday’s STP 400 Sprint Cup race at Kansas Speedway. Edwards covered the 1.5-mile oval in 28.162 seconds (191.748 mph) while the RFR rookie Stenhouse put down a time of 28.164 (191.734 mph) during Friday’s qualifying session.
Greg Biffle rounded out the RFR effort, qualifying 11th, with a time of 28.411 (190.067 mph).
“I had the pole there for about five minutes and it felt really good,” said Edwards, who initially set a track record with his time. “But we’ve got a great starting spot. It’s a good lap. I hope our car is as fast in race trim. It looked like Ricky was pretty good the little bit of race trim he ran and hopefully we can go get this thing tuned in tomorrow and win this race on Sunday. I think the Fords are going be really tough.”
All three of the RFR Fords carried “B-Strong” decals in support of the city of Boston and all those affected by this week’s tragic events.
Roush Fenway has pledged $100 for each lap it leads in Sunday’s race to the One Fund Boston; an initiative formed by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and Boston Mayor Tom Menino to help the people most affected by the tragic events that occurred in Boston on April 15, 2013.
“I know I can speak for all of Roush Fenway Racing in saying that our thoughts are with everyone there that’s not only suffered, but all the confusion that’s going on,” said Edwards.
“Without sounding cliché what Roush is doing is trying to do something to help,” added Edwards. “(RFR President) Steve Newmark and Jack Roush put together a program where Jack is going to donate $100 (to the One Fund Boston) for every lap that one of the Roush Fenway cars lead at the race track this weekend.”
“We’ve got a lot of ties to Boston with the Red Sox up there,” said Edwards. “I hear there are ties in the garage with folks that have lost family up there, so I think it’s something that just reminds us all that what we do here we’re very fortunate to do it and, hopefully, in some small way, just us racing this weekend somebody can get some amount of enjoyment out of it and know that we’re all thinking about them.”
Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup event it set for 1:00 p.m. EDT and will be televised live on FOX.
